Ambience

Ambience (from French ambiance) means, quite simply, the atmosphere of a place.

An important element of any space we come by; it is the least specific element of it, the hardest to pinpoint and yet can make the biggest difference in the way we feel about the space.

It is also an element that cannot be undermined in film: think about Dead Man (Jarmusch, 1995), The Limits of Control (Jarmusch, 2009) or Stalker (Tarkovsky, 1979). All these movies tell stories but it is their ambience that makes them stand out, and makes us remember them.

This little thing that we cannot touch follows us around wherever we go and whatever we do; and just like that can make us love or hate certain places and experiences...
